Benjamin Verdonck


Two viewing boxes, one after another, on one evening. 


Rainbow  

An intriguing viewing box, contemplating the refraction of light. In utter darkness, hatchways open and close. Shadows fall on the backdrop – the horizon – in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo or violet colours. Conceived as a playful counterpart to Waldeinsamkeit, they are of similar length and form a special pair in Verdonck’s ever-growing repertoire of mobile peep shows.


Waldeinsamkeit  

Generally translated as ‘the deep connection you feel when walking alone in the forest’, this word also stands for a feeling of insecurity in a dark and unpredictable space. 

A room turns into a room 
turns into a room 
turns into a black hole 
an overripe piece of fruit. 

A baroque miniature with faded colours, little hatches that open and close, light, darkness and a whole lot of strings. This cabinet of curiosities is the newest addition to Verdonck’s series of table-size mobile theatres.

It is a soft, slow and therefore striking light poem, the way a sound poem is with sounds of words. (…) This is pure enjoyment, immersing yourself in the hazy colors and lights. Exciting, captivating, so comforting. Enchantingly beautiful, to find oneself totally detached from the world.

Regenboog begins in shades of gray and almost complete darkness, causing euphoria when colours are introduced. It almost magic what Verdonck and co-creator Lucas Van Haesbroeck conjure up. The soundtrack by Lieven Stockx provides extra depth and rapture.
