Dieselnation (Smells Like Circus)
Mardulier & Deprez
The term 'circus' is debatable: Mardulier and Deprez do not make performances with classic circus tricks, but they consider their circus skills as tools to investigate the world. They like to call it 'anecdotal circus': with small interventions in the reality they investigate the unpredictability of bodies and objects.
For their latest performance Dieselnation, the two were inspired by trucker life. The transport sector is a subculture with its own styles: think for example of the decorated truck cabins and the personalized number plates. The truck drivers themselves were the first audience of Dieselnation. In May 2021, Mardulier and Deprez traveled along the highway between Ostend and Warsaw for a month to perform. Filmmaker Marylka Börresen documented the event. The performance at CAMPO is a retrospective of this journey in which you are immersed in the special world of the truck driver.
