Avondprogramma Minor Matter - Ligia Lewis

Deze voorstelling maakt deel uit van SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT, een festival van CAMPO, Vooruit, NTGent en Black speaks Back over identiteit en dekolonisatie.


De Dominicaans-Amerikaanse danseres / choreografe Ligia Lewis is voor het eerst te gast in CAMPO. Met Minor Matter presenteert ze deel twee van haar triptiek rond ‘blackness’. Het eerste deel, Sorrow Swag (2015, Prix Jardin d’Europe), is blauw gekleurd, in Minor Matter gebruikt Lewis de kleur rood om vorm te geven aan ideeën over liefde en razernij. 
 

Excerpts from Remi Raji’s Dream Talk, the opening text of Minor Matter by Ligia Lewis

I will like to turn you inside out and step into your skin
To be, that sober shadow in the mirror of indifference

Look at me, slowly, behold the irises wherein you hide
Wherein lies the ultrasound of hidden bleeding images

You shift, you shift, you shift and shift 

Because you know this is the last tomb of an invisible age of the dead.

I will like to tell you things you know, but never know

And because ours is a deep-scarred cataract of anguish
I will love you still in this age of hate and cholera

When you reach the crossroads where nothing means
And out of my lips will fall the seductive words of life

Because death is nothing but impossible silence

The first theorem of delight, the first desire of forgotten desires

Together we shall surprise the world of the spirit

BELL HOOKS CHOOSING THE MARGIN AS A SPACE OF RADICAL OPENNESS

I am located in the margin. I make a definite distinction between that marginality which is imposed by oppressive structures and that marginality one chooses as site of resistance - as location of radical openness and possibility. This site of resistance is continually formed in that segregated culture of opposition that is our critical response to domination. We come to this space through suffering and pain, through struggle. We know struggle to be that which pleasures, delights, and fulfills desire. We are transformed, individually, collectively, as we make radical creative space which affirms and sustains our subjectivity, which gives us a new location from which to articulate our sense of the world.

"(...) Met dit stuk creëerde de Amerikaanse choreografe een voorstelling voor drie zwarte performers, in reactie op de protestbeweging Black Lives Matter. Met de titel van het stuk roept Lewis het verband op tussen materialiteit en minderheden, in dit geval de materialiteit van zwarte lichamen en de ruimte van de black box. In de voorstelling worden een aantal frases van choreografen als Merce Cunningham, William Forsythe en Maurice Béjart gedanst. Doorheen die stukken uit de witte danscanon, die voorbeelden zijn van abstracte of minimalistische choreografieën, wordt ander bewegingsmateriaal geweven, zoals de energieke twostep, een worstelwedstrijd en de death drop. minor matter is daardoor een zeer diverse voorstelling die ruimte biedt voor verschillende bewegingsstijlen, maar ook muziekstijlen van barok tot hiphop."
